Sunscreen for Indian Skin: SPF, PA+++ and How Much to Apply
Élan Vivre Skin TeamShare
If you do only one thing for your skin, make it sunscreen. Daily sun protection helps prevent new dark spots, keeps existing pigmentation from deepening and slows the visible signs of ageing. In India, where UV levels are high for most of the year, it matters even more.
SPF and PA: what the numbers mean
- SPF measures protection from UVB – the rays that cause tanning and burning. Choose SPF 30 or higher for daily use and SPF 50 for long hours outdoors.
- PA+ to PA++++ measures protection from UVA – the rays linked to pigmentation and ageing. Look for PA+++ or PA++++.
- Broad spectrum on a label means the product protects against both.
How much sunscreen to apply
Most people apply less than half the amount tested in the lab, which means far less protection than the label says. A simple guide: two finger-lengths of sunscreen (about ¼ teaspoon) for the face and neck. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, about 15 minutes before going out.
When to reapply
- Every 2–3 hours if you are outdoors
- After sweating heavily, swimming or wiping your face
- On office days, once before stepping out in the afternoon is a good habit
A sunscreen stick or SPF powder makes reapplying over makeup easier.
Choosing the right texture
- Oily or acne-prone skin: gel or fluid textures with a matte finish
- Dry skin: cream sunscreens with hydrating ingredients
- Deeper skin tones: modern filters and tinted formulas avoid a white cast
Sunscreen + Vitamin C: the perfect pair
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works alongside sunscreen to help keep skin bright and even-looking. Apply your serum first, let it absorb, then moisturiser and sunscreen. Our Radiance Booster is designed for exactly this morning slot.
Common sunscreen myths
- “I don't need it indoors.” UVA passes through windows.
- “Darker skin doesn't need sunscreen.” Melanin offers some protection, but darker skin is more prone to pigmentation.
- “My makeup has SPF.” You rarely apply enough foundation to get the stated protection.
