Hyaluronic Acid Serum: How to Use It for Plump, Hydrated Skin

Élan Vivre Skin Team

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most loved skincare ingredients for a simple reason: it gives almost every skin type a visible hydration boost, with very little risk of irritation.

What hyaluronic acid does

HA is a humectant – it attracts water and holds it in the skin's surface layers. Well-hydrated skin looks plumper, smoother and more radiant, and fine dehydration lines look softer.

Dry vs dehydrated skin

  • Dry skin lacks oil: it needs richer moisturisers.
  • Dehydrated skin lacks water: it can even be oily, but feels tight and looks dull. HA is especially helpful here.

How to apply it (the step most people miss)

  1. Cleanse, and leave the skin slightly damp – or mist with water
  2. Press 2–3 drops of HA serum into the skin
  3. Seal it in with moisturiser straight away

In very dry air, HA without a moisturiser on top can leave skin feeling tighter, because there is little moisture in the air for it to draw from.

Morning or night?

Both. In the morning it creates a smooth base for sunscreen and makeup. At night it pairs well with retinoids to keep skin comfortable. Our Overnight Renewal combines Hyaluronic Acid with soothing Chamomile and gentle Bakuchiol for softer, smoother-feeling skin by morning.

Who should use it?

  • Dry and dehydrated skin – especially in winter and air-conditioned rooms
  • Oily skin that needs light, oil-free hydration
  • Anyone using retinol or Vitamin C who wants extra comfort

Pairing guide

HA layers well with Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol. See our serum layering guide for the right order, or the AM–PM Glow & Repair Combo for a ready-made routine.
