How to Start Using Retinol Safely (and Why SPF Matters)
Élan Vivre TeamShare
Retinol is one of the most popular anti-ageing ingredients, and one of the easiest to overdo. Starting slowly and protecting your skin from the sun makes the difference between a comfortable routine and irritated skin.
Before you start
- Patch test on your inner forearm and wait 24 hours.
- If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before using retinol products.
- Avoid starting right before a holiday, a day of long sun exposure, or an event where you need calm skin.
How to introduce retinol
- Start slowly. Use it two or three evenings a week for the first few weeks.
- Keep it simple. Cleanse, apply your serum, then moisturise. With Eternal Glow, use 2–3 drops for the face and neck.
- Build up. If your skin feels comfortable, increase how often you use it, following the product directions.
- Give it time. Skin changes gradually, so judge results over weeks and months, not days.
Why sunscreen matters
Retinol can make skin more sensitive to the sun, and sun exposure is also one of the biggest drivers of visible ageing. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply if you are outdoors for long. Daily sunscreen is one of the most important steps in any anti-ageing routine.
What to avoid at first
- Using strong exfoliating acids on the same night while your skin is adjusting.
- Applying too much product. More does not mean faster results.
- Applying to broken or irritated skin.
What is normal, and when to stop
Mild dryness or slight tightness can happen while skin adjusts. If you notice persistent redness, burning, swelling or peeling, stop using the product and speak to a dermatologist.
